Sun Damage: Sunspots, Age Spots, Photo Damage Sun damage also known as age spots, sunspots, and photo damage can be either acute i.e. sunburn or more commonly chronic such as the gradual changes in the skin caused by an accumulation of sun exposure throughout one's life. Chronic photo damage results in either a cosmetic change the appearance of the skin called photo aging, or changes that are of medical and health concerns such as pre-cancerous lesions and skin cancers. The evidence is very strong that ultra-violet light is the cause of most of the changes that we consider to be associated with aging of the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are signs seen on sun damage skin. The skin has a roughness and a laxity or looseness the more damage it becomes. In addition, age spots and mottled brown patches of increased pigmentation start to appear as a result of the sun's damage. Sometimes these patches become irregular and produce what are known as lentigos. In areas around the back of the neck a leathery texture and coarseness with deep lines is frequently seen, and the skin may feel dry and scaly. Chronic sun exposure can produce a thickened layer in the upper dermis known as solar elastosis, which gives a yellowish chicken like look to the skin. Be sure to take care of your skin to avoid the signs of aging including age spots, sunspots, liver spots and photo damage. |
