The Essence of Age Spots Age Spots also referred to as liver spots, sunspots, and brown spots are the indications of an overabundance of melanin – pigmented cells making up the color in our skin. These dark brown blotches of extra pigmentation (color) occur in response to the skin protecting itself most commonly from excessive sun exposure and are seen on the hands, face and body. In addition to sun exposure, other causes for age spots result from free-radical damage, perfumes, and the interaction of medications (such as birth control pills) and sun exposure. While age spots (also called liver spots) are harmless, most people consider them an unwelcome sign of aging. The most important measure to take to prevent new age spots is to wear sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. In addition to preventing new spots, products with key active ingredients can be applied to reverse the appearance of existing age spots. Products containing antioxidants, such as vitamin C have been shown to clarify skin and help reverse the effects of sun damage. Licorice extract is a natural skin lightener with depigmenting effects that inhibits melanin production. There are also a variety of cosmetic treatments available to correct the signs of age spots and pigmentation such as Chemical peels, Photo-light or Laser Light Therapies, Laser skin resurfacing, and Microdermabrasion. |
